Accidental Love (p. 44-175)

Summary
Marisa's first few days were awkward and lonely. Just like any new school, the kids seemed strange and they all seemed to be looking at her, "the new girl". Is was nothing like her old school where she could slap anyone who gave her a dirty look, here she had to try to remain cool. But everything seemed to be going fine. Her and Rene are getting along and the play is going fine. she got into the chorus. She decided to lose weight and Rene decided to lift some weights. Everything was going fine until Rene's mother found out about her. Rene's mother was a strict mother who kept Rene closed off from the rest of the world. She didn't want her son dating Marisa because she thought it was going to distract him from his school work. Rene than told Marisa that they had to break it off, and after that everything went down hill. The school board found out that Marisa had lied about her address so they had to expel her. So, she went back to her old school; where everyone was surprised to see her. Marisa couldn't believe her bad luck, no more Hamilton Magnet High School , and worst of all, no more Rene. It seemed nothing was going to get better until Rene transferred to her school. Marisa had wore a dress for the first time, and she was expecting the surprise at all. Rene had told her that he had an argument with his mother, who left him with bruises, and decided to live with his father. His father knew that his mother would fight, so he threatened to take her to court for hitting Rene. Marisa was so happy to see Rene that the whole school seemed to disappear. She was happy to see her dorky nerd again. And, as it is in love movies, they had their first snow fall!

Quote
"Marisa let her mother speak her mind because her own mind was on Rene. Sure, they would see each other on the sly, but she would miss seeing him daily. She started weeping and turned away when her mother offered her a Kleenex" (Soto 160).

Reaction
I picked this quote because it's something that every teenage girl goes through. I can relate to Marisa because the worst part about your first love is your first heart break; and that can be tough to get over. Most teenage girls won't share that with their parents, but Marisa did and I think that it was a good thing that she did. It's hard to go through your first, or any, heart break alone. When Rene's mother was first introduced I knew she was going to be trouble. And i guess that Rene acted anyway a regular teen would. When he called Marisa he told her that he wasn't going to let his mother tear them apart, and for teenagers if it's love they will do anything to be together. I get his mother's concern, but everything she did was uncalled for. I didn't think the book was going to end that way, but I liked how it ended. I just think that the whole "first snow fall with the one you love" theme was unrealistic.

Accidental Love (p, 1-44)

Summary
Marisa is a tough Latino (hispanic) who speaks her mind and doesn't mind fighting, even though her parents beg her not to. The story starts in the middle of action with Marisa skipping school to go see her best friend in the hospital. The guard see's her but he doesn't care. Marisa goes to a school made of Latinos and Blacks, with White and Asian trying to act Latino and Black. So, when she get's to the hospital she asks her friend if she wanted her to beat up and man who put her there. Her best friend Alicia had gotten into a car crash with her boyfriend Roberto. Right after she found out Roberto was cheating on her. Alicia was in the hospital with a broken leg but with a broken heart as well. Marisa couldn't stand to see her in pain, and she promised that Roberto would get what he deserved, but Alicia told her not to do anything. Well, Marisa got caught at the hospital by her mother, but after she got scolded they decided to leave. Marisa said good bye to her friend and was on her way when she ran into Roberto and his friend, Rene, in the hospital lobby. Marisa couldn't contain herself and started to punch Roberto. Her mother was able to get her off him and bring her home. When they were home Marisa's mom told her father that she skipped school but he didn't seem to care. During dinner, Marisa's phone started to ring when she realized that she had the wrong phone. It was Rene's, the boy who was with Roberto. They decided to meet outside her school to exchange phones. When they met up, Marisa couldn't believe her eyes. Rene was the ultimate nerd! She tried to contain herself and not to be mean. After that they went to the park, Marisa didn't know what it was but she started liking Rene. After that she kept waiting for his calls and even decided to change schools and go to Rene's. She described his school of being an all white rich people school. But when she got their she thought that maybe they have the same problems she does and their lives weren't all perfect after all. When she got their she started thinking about how she should tell Rene that he's such a geek and how to "hook up his wardrobe". Make him dress better. While all this is happening, Marisa still have to deal with her weight an losing it.

Quote
"Marisa was unfamiliar with her new school, though she suspected that most of the students came from homes where money grew on trees. But she had to admit that she might be wrong. Maybe those money trees were bare and fruitless, and maybe the students had their own fears" (Soto 35).

Reaction
I totally agree with the quote above. Sometimes we look at the physical appearance and come up with our conclusion, and most times those physical base conclusions, or even stereotypes are not true. Like the quote says maybe the inside tells a whole different story than what the eyes can see. I also like the fact that the book has a Spanish glossary in the back.

A Natural History of Love (42-90)

Summary
As Rome grew larger in every aspect, land, variety, and the imagination of it's populace, Romans "perfected the lisure time" (42). Now, the Roman women were able to have more freedom, and with it came more oppurtunities along with thir flexible morals. The women of the first class usually worried more about their looks. Stuff like what jewlerygoes with what, and thier make-up. But to th Romans , to love someone wasn't a good enough reasonto get married, but they did know it's power and what it means. Then we get to the Middle Ages, thasts when France changed. The book said that throughout history women were expected to be "clean".They were judged on how clean their house was, and they were expected to be "sexually clean", meaning keeping thier virginity. We than start talking about knights and how it was difficult for them to be spiritual when their main focus was to kill. A Knight had to keep up with the Chilalry's code, which was to be courteous and kind when they were to deal with the other people. When they would fight, the intention was to hurt the other person, and alot of people were injured. You had to be strong, and if you showed weakeness, you was considered a sissy. They were liers, murderes, and engaged in alot of tournaments. If a Knight was killed during a tournament, the church called it a "suicide", meaning they went straight to hell. In those times, christianity tradition preached that too much love dangerous. Husbands were abl to kiss, carss, and fondle her, but he couldn't enjoy it. And any men who felt erotic passion for his wife was commiting adultry. They were only allowed to live together as business partners. They were only suppose to feel affection for eachother, get amiably and just happened to have children. The idea of an all-out love wasn't even thinkable. Now we get into the Books of Love. Their idea about love was rare, like books, were they can only find it in libraries. It talks abut how love is important and how even God gav the orders that we should love one another. It comes natural. Alot of people at that time turned to celibacy to keep themselves from lust, but something happened that changed their idea that erotic love was wrong and immoral. When William TX came back from the crusades, he began to write love songs, and about yearning, we now know these as the first troubadour love songs. It talked about how the soul is "ever-seeking" to find it's other half. Then we talk about modern love. The book started talking about the idea of a femme fatal. This is when the women gave men pain and a sense of guilt. The comes Modern Love. It says that the way we are now came from choice, privacy, and books. It started talking about how now women and men wanted to live out of their parent's house, alone, together. How people started to give rooms different functions. For example, the bedroom, which is now made for couples to do what they have to do in privacy without anyone knowing. Books came into the mix when lovers started talking about authors.

Quote
"We treasure love. It quenches, vexes, guides, and murders us. It seeps into th mortar of all our days. It feed our passions, it fills our fantasies, it inspires our art" (Akerman 90).

Reaction
I agree with the quote above. Basically it's saying that love makes us full. Love can help us, or it can kill us. So far the book is ok, but sometimes I think that the history background was a little too long.

A Natural History of Love (17-42)

Summary
Now we are getting into Greece. Under the title of the section, there's a subtitle saying "The world of the Citizen Kingdom". We start talking about Athens. It stated that their constitution was like ours, they had a democracy. The life of the men is so much different than that of the women in Athens. The wife never dined with her husband, and if they had a male visitor, the women was to get out of there. And those women who were apart of the men gatherings, they were looked on as prostitutes. Teenage girls were to marry young, but to an older men. Teenage boys were off limits, and sometimes the men were well into their 30's. They couple married then they fell in love. Love didn't have to do anything with getting married, it was a lot about being able to produce children. The women in Greece were very cherished, but they had a lower part in the community then that of the man. The book talks about a women named Artemis, she was beautiful, "excluded sensuality energy" and many women adored and followed her, even till their wedding day. Then we get into men loving men in Greece. The relationships happened between older men and younger boys. Aristophanes described a boy in "Clouds" to be modest and honest and beautiful. Plato has Socrates and his friends discuss these relationships at the dinner table. The family was never a good one, women had to live in the shadows and hide their feelings, while men can live openly. After Greece we start talking about Rome. And under this title, there's the subtitle "The Nightmare of Girls". Rome was a place that when a girl was born they often abandoned them and left. Most mother's would have to literally try to find away that they can save their babies. Then it tells us a story about Dido and Aeneas. Aeneas was a sailor who got lost at sea and had to go to land where he finds the queen Dido. She has lost her husband but it seemed that Aeneas had come at the right time, because they fall in love. One day they went hunting, and there, they made love. To Aeneas this really didn't mean anything, but to Dido and the Romans, this meant marriage. After a time of bliss, the Gods come to tell Aeneas that he has to go back and find his lost land Italy. Aeneas, heartbroken, doesn't tell Dido and leaves without telling her anything. When the news finally gets to Dido, she is so heartbroken that she decides to kill herself with Aeneas' sword hoping that he will see her funeral from sea. Later in the story, Aeneas gets a chance to the underworld and there he sees the ghost of Dido. He begs for forgiveness but she doesn't forgive and runs away, still hating him for what he did. In Rome the father chooses who the girl marries at age 14, that's why she didn't need much education and Romans never really cared much for education. It was law, though, that a women must agree with the marriage, but she couldn't reject her father's wishes, so she had to marry. When you had children it would mean that you are really married. At the wedding, gifts were given and the bride wears the ring, on the same finger as today. There's a story behind why that specific finger was chosen. It was said that there was a very delicate nerve that starts from the tip of that finger and travels to the heart. It was only fitting that they put the honorable ring on that finger, that has that "loose connection with the heart". It was said that when ever a man and a woman touched hands, they touched hearts. The wedding night was almost like the women got raped because even though she didn't want to do, they had relations. Once again, the marriage was to produce children and nothing else. The Romans were very sexual people, but they would only have sex at night, but there people who did it, secretly, at daytime. Then we start talking about Ovid and his love poems. Ovid had many lovers, which was considered wrong. Romans, at that time, had a lot of rules. Like if you were divorced you have to get remarried in 6 months, and if your spouse died, you had to get remarried in two years. It was no such time to publish a book on infidelity, but Ovid choose this time. It got him into a lot of trouble. Augustus, the ruler at that time, had every right to banish him. People saw him as somebody who only cared for sexual conquest. Just like Shakespeare, Ovid promises his girlfriends that they would be immortal through his love poems. Although at that time Augustus banned "The Art of Love", it has still made it through the years as a "brilliantly insightful meditation on love, vanity, and temptation".
Quote
"The man was said to receive 'the hands of his bride, and the ring symbolized that with her hand sh gave her innermost self. Every time they touched hands, they touched hearts" (Ackerman 36).
Reaction
These pages of the book made alot of sense. My knowledge grew on the Romans, I had knew that they were all about sexuality. The quote above makes you think alot about the union of a husband and wife. Even though in those times that marriage wasn't about love, the words written above describes how strong a love between two people can be.

A Natural History of Love (13-17)

Summary
So far we have talked about Cleopatra and love poems in Egypt. Now it breaks love into 6 key themes. The first theme is "Love's alchemy, or the power to transform". This theme is all about how we have problems with who we are and by loving our partners, or our significant half, we learn to love ourselves. The second theme is "Idealizing the beloved in images drawn from nature". This theme talks about why we refer to someone as a gem, or a flower, or the moon, but we don't say skyscraper. It's about using nature to express our love for each other. The 3rd theme is " Love is enslavement". It's about how when were inlove we give part of our freedom away, and how were more willing to give it someone we love, then the government or a dictator. The 4th theme is "Being Disabled", meaning how we can't keep our mind of the person and how we never seem to be focusing on anything but them. It talks about how love becomes a sickness that we all want. The 5th theme is " A secret kept from one's parents" this theme is all about us not being able to express love to the person or people we love but were willing to express it to strangers. We keep it a secret from the person we really love. The 6th theme is "Redoubling of the senses", and this is all about a lover's touch. These are the 6 themes of love. Then it starts talking about incest marriage and how some thought it to be normal, while other thought it to be wrong and condoned in the bible. We long for the desire to love, and to be loved.

Quote
"...every now and then, people go haywire, lose their ability to think clearly, have stomachaches, can't sleep properly, and spend hours daydreaming. Such a state has all the earmarks of disease and, as the Egyptian love poems remind us, people have always described love as sickness" (Ackerman 13).

Reaction
I agree with alot of what the 6 themes of love is. When people are in love they do feel like they can't do nothing, and everytime they try it's like their minds walks and we start thinking about the one we love. I also agree with the fact that were more willing to give away all our freedom to the one we love, rather than the government. The quote above, once again, states how when your in love your always daydreaming. It also describes love as being a sickness.

A Natural History of Love (3-12)

Summary
Love. Hard to define because love had many different meanings. There's a love between a girlfriend and her boyfriend, parental love, and love for material things. Love can bring the most sane people almost to the brink of insanity, it can make the toughest people become soft. Love can make the strongest people, become weak. It's a word that means so much, but is often used lightly. This book "A Natural History of Love" gives you the inside and out about love. It not only takes us to modern times but first it takes us, way back. I'm talking about Egypt, Greece, Rome, and even the middle ages. But first we take a trip to Egypt and learn about how they used and thought about love. First it talks about Cleopatra and her romance. Cleopatra was born in 69 B.C and was mainly Greek. she had everyman she wanted, and every men wanted her, they couldn't help it. One thing I really found interesting was that Cleopatra was married to Mark Anthony, and they had kids together. The book talks about their love and how she and Caesar had a history as well. Cleopatra's life was filled with everything she wanted, she was elegant, and wore the things. She was pretty pretty, it was the things she wore, the way she carried herself that made men follow her when she entered a room. Everyone thought that she was the best, but she had a lot of bad history. For instance, she killed her siblings in order to become queen, but Egyptians didn't seem to write about that kind of stuff. Then, the book talked about what Egyptians thought about love, and their idea can seem to be a bit sexual today. Egyptians expressed their love in many ways, and the most common was in music, dances, and poems. More frequently it was in love poems. Their poems are amazing and beautiful!

Quote
"Keeping our failings a secret, we assume no one on earth is as neurotic, no one as uniquely flawed. The rampantly beautiful person we are attracted to couldn't possibly be as frail. He is a contagion of virtues. Loving him, we sing his praises, highlighting all his good points. We redefine him to himself. Through love on learns to feel lovable" (Akerman 12).

Reaction
So far I found this book to be very very interesting. The whole definition of love keeps me thinking. I like the fact how the book talks about all the different love countries and romance time periods. The quote above is a way we feel when we love someone. It was talking about how were all imperfect and sometimes we find that the person we love have no flaws and that were the ones who have to work on things. The quote is saying that when we love someone we can't seem to find things that they need to work on, and that by loving them, by being in love, we learn to love ourselves and they learn to love us.

Rosemary's Baby Movie

Sections/Characters minimized in the film
One of the characters minimized in the film was the doctor. In this book he seemed to be on every chapter and Rosemary would go to him every week, but in the film he didn't seem to appear much, and when his scenes did come, some were cut short.

Sections/Characters emphasized in the film
There was actually no characters that were minimized in the book that were emphasized in the film. The characters with the big part were Guy, Rosemary, Roman, and Minnie. The film was all about Guy and Rosemary, as in the book.

Narration
There was no narration, or a voice from "above". The character's did all the explaining to us as part of their scripts. In the book there was a narrator who told us the story when it wasn't Rosemary telling us, but in the film it's mostly the actors.

Recurring images(motifs)
A recurring image is when Rosemary keeps thinking back on the "dream" she had, which was reality. Another is when the film kept showing her in pain and the necklace that Minnie and Roman gave her.

Use of music/ sound effects
There's a use of music in the beginning of the film. There's a lullaby, it's not your regular one though, it sounds mysterious, almost as if your going to see something horrible and scary in the first scene. It gets your heart pumping expecting something to pop out. This lullaby is almost like the soundtrack of the film. It begins it and ends it. But through out the film there are some sound effects. For example, when Rosemary is running, or when she's scared and just found out something. Like in the scene when she was in the telephone booth, and when she turned to get out she saw a man that looked like the doctor. She was scared, the they used sound effects to show the man turning around.

Film Terms
In the movies there were a lot of medium shot, and long shots. But most of all there were close-up shots to show emotions and most of them were Rosemary's. There was a lot of POV (Point Of View) shots as well. One of them was when Rosemary was brought through the closet and her eyes were opened, we saw the bottom of the cabinets, we saw the people standing around her, and we saw Satan all through her eyes. Another example was when she went to open the door for Minnie and she looked through the peep hole.

Rosmary's Baby p.219-245

Summary
Part 3. The last part of the book. Rosemary wakes up to find Guy sitting by her side. They smiled. She asked him what the baby was, he said a boy. She asked him if he was alright and he said, with a long pause, "yes". And with that, she drifted back to sleep. Later, she woke up, and remembered more. Laura-Louise was by her side and Rosemary asked her where the baby was. Laura-Louise, unsure of what to say, called Guy and Dr. Sapirstein. She asked them where the baby was and thet gave her the answer, the baby's dead. When she asked why they told her it was because it was in the wrong position, but Rosemary knew better and told them that they were lying and that they took it. She started going crazy and yelling, with that Dr. Sapirstein gave her an injection. After they gave her her soup, she confronted Guy about Dominick and the tickets that he supposebly gave them. She asked him if he was a witch and he said that she was worrying too much and that there's no such thing as a witch. Then she remembered what she read about witches. The book said that before you become a member they out a mark on your shoulder. Then she remembered again how Guy didn't take off his shirt for a look time infront of her. So, just as Guy was about to leave she asked him to take off his shirt. So he did, and there was nothing there so she let the subject go. Because her breast were filled with milk, she had to get rid of it, Dr. Sapirstein showed her how to use the pump. After a few days she started recieving gifts. The next few weeks were normal, she ate, she drank, and took the pills that were given to her. One morning, after 2-3 weeks had passes by, she thought she heard a baby crying and confronted Florence about it, the person who came to get the milk, but she couldn't hear anything. Guy came up with a story that some new people moved in and it was thier baby. From then on she kept hearing it over and over, and she realized that it was right next door. Rosemary began to notice a pattern. The crying started, they came for more milk, after they left the crying stopped. She decided to ask what they did with the milk and Laura-Louise said that they threw it away. Rosemary didn't believe her, so she decided to put a dirty spoon into the milk, Laura-Louise stopped her and when Rosemary asked why she couldn't put the spoon in the cup Laura-Louise said that it was too messy. Rosemary has figured it out! The baby is still alive and it was in Minnie and Romans apartment. She was determined to get it, no matter what. She started thinking about everything and she knew that their had too be another way to get to Minnie and Romans apartment. It was the closet, the one she had seen in her dream; only it wasn't a dream, they had really took her through there. She also found out that the pills were the ones that were making her feel weak. She started planning, planning a plan to get Andy back, even if it meant killing them all. Part of her plan was to put 8 of those pills into Laura-Louise or Helen Wees' cup, that would send them off to sleep. She kept pretending that she was still weak, and when the apartment was clear she started her plan. Sure enough the pills made Leah, another one of the people who were taking care of her, fall asleep. Rosemary took the sharpest knife they had and made her way to the closet. It was the closet after all! She opened the door, and went into Minnie and Roman's. As she was walking down their hallway she saw all the paintings she had seen in her dream, including the burning church. She made her way to the living room and peaked in. There was everyone, including Minnie and Roman, she couldn't believe that they were back already; she began to doubt that they were ever away. Looking ahead she saw a black bassinet, her baby was in there. She walked into the living room, but they didn't notice her. A little while they noticed her. She walked to the bassinet, Roman tried to get her attention but she didn't pay him any mind. As she walked closer, she gribbed her knife tighter and looking at the other people in the room. Rosemary looked at her sweet baby, but something was wrong. It was his eyes, he had golden-yellow eyes, scary eyes. They said that he had his father's eyes, but Guy's eyes were brown. Roman told her that Satan was his father. Then they started saying "Hail Adrian, Hail Satan", and Adrian was to be his name. Rosemary couldn't believe it, she couldn't take it anymore, so she sat down and the men went to check for Leah. Rosemary knew that her baby was ganna grow up to be bad. She knew that the only answer was to kill the baby, she just couldn't let him grow up to be bad. But as she was rocking the craddle, she came with another solution. She doubted that he was all bad, she thought that maybe she could teach him to be good. She looked at little Andy, and begged for a smile.

Quote
"..Will you please stop looking so worried?' She poked the tip of his nose. 'Do you know how to smile yet, Andy? Do you? Come on, little funny-eyes Andy, can you smile? Can you smile for Mommy?' She tapped the silver ornament and set it swinging. 'Come on Andy,' she said. 'One little smile. Come on, Andy-candy" (Levin 245).
Reaction
WOAH! That's all I can say. The end of the story was so crazy. I mean I expecting some of it, but everything that she out together made the story fall into place. I wouldn't of guessed that Andy was Satan's son. But I guess that the quote is above is what the book is all about. The quote shows how much Rosemary really loves Andy, even though he's not "normal" and he was born to do bad things. She's determined to find the good in him and make him do good. That moment that she had with him is so precious, it made up for the 3 weeks that she didn't see him. A mother's love for her child to so big that it can do and conquer anything, and at the end Rosemary was thinking about killing him, but she knew that the love she had from him wouldn't let him be bad. It also paints a brighter picture, we should always look for the best in people. This book was so amazing. Can't wait to see the movie!

Rosemary's Baby (p. 126-216)

Summary
As Hutch was leaving the apartment he was looking for the gloves that he couldn't find. Hutch asked Rosemary, and rosemary asked Guy, but noone saw it. Hutch left, and Rosemary stayed with Guy. Soon after Hutch called back for Rosemaryand Guy tried making excuses saying that she couldn't talk because she was too much in pain, but Hutch insisted anyway. Before Hutch left the house he told Rosemary that the Tannis root inside her charm sounded and looked wierd and that he would do some research on it. Now, he has some news and that's why he called. Hutch told Rosemary to meet him infront of his building at 1:00 because he had to tell her something. Guy took the phone, brought it to the room, and went out to satisfy his ice cream craving. Right after guy left the apartment Rosemary heard the Vastevets door bell ring and thought that Guy went over to ask them if they wanted anything. And with that Rosemary felt that sharp pain that she has been feeling for weeks now. That next morning Rosemary called Minnie and told her not to bring her drink because she was going out to meet a friend, Hutch. Because she got to the building early, Rosemary decided to wait, and she waited and waited, and hutch was nowhere to be seen. Worried, Rosemary entered the building and rang Hutch's apartment. Grace, Hutch's friend, picked up the phone and told Rosemary that he was taken to the hospital in a deep coma. Caught off guard, Rosemary started walking and soon came across Minnie. She took her home and gave her the drink. The sour drink only made the pain even worse. Rosemary had started some wierd habits and food preference. She was eating raw fish. The pain was getting so intense that the pain became her whole world and she learned to live with it. Rosemary became suspicious of the daily drinks she was getting and no longer kept drinking it. Rosemary had found herself so out of the loop, so she decided to throw a part for her friends that she hadn't seen in awhile. At the party she was telling her friends all about the pain and they told her that her pregnancy was un-normal and that she had to see another doctor. This got Guy all worked and told her that she had no right to question Sapirstein intentions. Then just like magic the pain was all gone and the baby started moving. The miracle of life turns into a mystery. After that everything was going smoothly. Rosemary started drinking the drink again, but this time the drink came with a piece of cake. Guy was getting his big break. Then Rosemary was brought brought back to reality when she learned that Hutch had died on his hospital bed. When she told Guy, he went blank, almost as if life was stucked out of him. Rosemary was surprised by the way Guy reacted, it was un-expected. When Rosemary went to the memorial service, Grace, Hutch's friend, gave Rosemary a book the he had left for her. The book was about witchcraft, the one he was reading the night he got into the coma. When she got home she opened the package, and the title of the book was All Of Them Witches by J.R Hanslet. She could tell by the markings in the book that Hutch had already began studying it. Hutch had left a message for Rosemary saying that the name was a anagram, but he didn't say which name so Rosemary started playing with the scrabble set and began looking at names. She kept redoing every name untill she came across Steven Mercato, the son of Adrian Mercato, someone who practiced witch craft, and the name quickly turned to Roman Castevet. Rosemary told Guy, and she started to worry. Guy told her that Roman doesn't practice witch craft and that their friendly, nice, people. But Rosemary becomes paranoid and starts questioning the motives of the Castevets. Rosemary told Minnie what she had found and Minnie asked her not to tell Roman about it. Soon after Minnie told Rosemary that she and Roman were taking a trip around the world because it was Romans lasts days. Rosemary found herself feeling sad and asked them to come back soon. Days go by, and the baby the almost here. But before that Rosemary meets a guy named Dominick, the guy who "supposebly" gave Guy a pair of tickets to The Fantasticks the day before Donald Baumgart, the guy that Guy was going up against for a part, became blind. Rosemary said thanks, but Dominick didn't seem to remember giving Guy anything. She came to a conclusion that Guy wanted her out of the apartment for some reason and she was going to find out why. She began looking back one everything that happened and it all became to suspicious. The she came to the conclusion that somebody had put a spell on Donald to make him blind and put Hutch into a coma. It all came down to one thing, that Roman and Minnie were witches, the "tannis root" was Devils Fungus, that guy stole Hutch's gloves and gave it to roman when he "went out for ice cream", thats why she heard the doorbell. Hutch was becoming a little too suspicious so they put him into a coma. Then she thought about the baby, was he/she going to be a pay back to the other's for the favor they did for Guy? Guy never wanted a baby untill now. She knew what they were planning to do with it and she wasn't going to let it happen. But, then, she thought about Donald, what did Guy take of his? It didn't make any sense so she decided to disregard the whole witch idea. That is until she went to see him. He told her that him and Guy exchanged ties because it would be fun, and this all happened the day before he became blind. Rosemary got scared and realized what she thought was all true, so she packed her baby bag and when to see Dr. Sapirstein. When she got there the receptionist told her that he was with a patient and that she'd have to wait. Then the receptionist told her that she liked her perfume, and that it was better than what she usually wore. Rosemary told her that it was a good luck charm that had something in it. Thats when the receptionist told her that Dr. Sapirstein has one just like that, and Rosemary got scared so she went outside. Rosemary knew that he was one of the witches. She ran to the nearest phone booth and called Dr. Hill, he told her that she can come see her. As Rosemary was telling him about the whole thing, Dr. Hill just couldn't bring himself to believe her so he made her lie down and called Guy and Dr. Sapirstein and they came to pick her up. As they got to the apartment Rosemary made it seem that she dropped her purse and she ran to the elevator to get upstairs first. She locked the door but they eventually got in. CRAMPS. The baby was coming, right there, right now, right when she was trying to get away from them. They held her down and she couldn't believe that she was having her baby at home in at hands of witches, of Satans servants. They gave her a shot. She looked at them. Then it was complete DARKNESS.

Qoute

"...pain, even constant pain, was no excuse for staying indoors, as much as she had. She would fight it from now on, fight it with air and sunlight and activity, not succumb to it in Bramford gloom under the well-meant pamperings of Minnie and Guy and Roman. Pain, begone! she thought; I will have no more of thee! The pain stayed, immune to Positive Thinking" (Levin 136).

Reaction

When Rosemary said the quote above she was thinking that maybe if she thought positive thoughs that her pain would be gone. She couldn't believe that she left pain stop her from living her life. I think that it's something we can all think about. Can we really afford to waste out time hanging around the house? Sometimes we use the lamest excuses not to go outside. What Rosemary had in mind was that if she kept thinking positive she'll get results, this is something we can all start doing. Thinking positive doesn't cost us nothing, but somehow we keep thinking negative because those negative thoughts seems more realistic than positive ones. Even though if nothing changes we will have a better attitude towards things and we will look at things from a brighter side, like Rosemary was starting to do.

Rosemary's Baby (p. 65-126)

Summary
Guy has been spending alot of time with the castevets' lately. Rosemary didn't feel like going because of her period but she wont be alone because Minnie and Laura-Louise, minni's friend, invited themselves over. While rosemary was keeping busy making window cushions for the windows, Minnie gave her a little present, it was the same exact ball-charm that Terry had. A part of her didn't understand why it was given to her. Rosemary couldn't bring herself to wear the charm because of the awkward smell, dispite the fact that Guy thinks it's rude. Everything was going good but something strange happened. Guy heard news that Donald Baumgart, the guy he was going up against on a part, had gone blind and he couldn't do it. Guy became depressed and wouldn't pay Rosemary any mind for days. When Guy finally came to his sense's he apologized and told Rosemary that they should have a baby, and soon. They had a romantic dinner, but Rosemary started to feel a little dizy after the cup of mousse that Minnie gave them. But little to Guy's knowledge, Rosemary didn't finish the mousse, instead she dumped it on her napkin and threw it away. After Rosemary passed out Guy continued to make love to her, and Rosemary noticed that nothing was a dream, but more of a reality. She had a "dream" that something was sracthing her, a "dream" that somebody pushed her through a door into Minnies house and everybody was there, almost like a party, but except that they were naked. She seen something that was almost non-humane and that looked like a monster. From that day forward things between her and Guy hadn't been the same. That passion that they had wasn't the same anymore. A few days had past and Guy told Rosemary that she was pregnant because her period didn't come yet. She didn't believe him but it turned out to be true. Rosemary began wearing that ball charm that Minnie gave her inorder to keep the baby save. The Castevets transferred her to another doctor who they know very well. Roman finally came to visit and found everything suspicious, the castevets, the "special drink that they were giving her, and because of the pain that she was experiencing.

Quote
"There were so many dangers to worry about in the months ahead; fires, falling objects, cars out of control; dangers that had never been dangers before but were dangers now, now that Andrew-or-Susan was begun and living" (Levin 111).

Reaction
Th quote shows how much a mother thinks about when she becomes pregnant. Like Rosemary said all the things that never seemed dangerous before becomes a danger because you have this new life that has started and it's your responsibility to take care of it, even though sometimes they can go a little overboard. The story has become more interesting now that Rosemary's pregnant. Somethings are becoming a little more mysterious, like why did Minnie give them the mousse that made her dizy, and why did Rosemary have that horrible dream that seemed so real? I think that she's into something, some sort of spell and I don't think that the drink that she's given is working, and I can't wait to find out!

Rosemary's Baby (p. 3-65)

Summary
Rosemary's Baby: scary, thrilling, and bound to give you goose bumps. Through the first few page of the book we get to meet Guy, Rosemary, Hutch, Minnie, Roman, Terry, and a few other characters. Guy in inspiring actor who's still waiting for the big role that will move them to Hollywood, but until then he's working on his career with the little roles he has and rosemary is always there to support them. Rosemary and Guy had been trying to find an apartment in the most beautiful building ever, the BRAMFORD, only there were no more space. So they were put on the waiting list. Just as they found another ( not as beautiful and big but good enough for them) house, they got the call they were waiting for. They got the house! Even though the apartment belonged to an old lady that had died, they took it. Now Hutch, a long time friend of there's, is trying to keep them from moving into the apartment by telling them horrible stories that suppossibly happened at the Bram. He told them the story of the Trench sisters, two sisters who ate little children, including their niece. He also told them about Adrian Marcato, who practice witchcraft, and since people had believed him, he got mobbed and attacked, and almost killed in the lobby. The stories obviously gave Rosemary the chills, but Guy quickly dismissed them by telling her that Hutch was just trying to scare them. Once they finally moved in, Rosemary kept herself busy by decorating the house and making sure everything is in order, and Guy was away working on getting roles. Rosemary was always going about her day, unphased at all by what Hutch said until she had to go down to the basement, the most scariest part of the building. Hutch had once told her that someone killed a baby and left it at the corner of the basement. But she quickly found a laundry mate named Terry. Terry was staying with Minnie and Roman, who basically adopted her, she was going through some stuff times and they saved her and gave her a home, something nobody had ever done before. She and Rosemary quickly hit it off and Rosemary brought her upstairs to meet Guy. Unfortunately, Terry was hurting inside my something that nobody can know, that perfect smile that she put off for all to see fooled everyone, except for herself. That brought destruction. Terry jumped out the window one day when Rosemary and Guy went out. When they were returning back they got startled by the police cars and the many people outside. Once they came closer they saw that it was Terry. That's how they met Minnie and Roman, who couldn't believe that Terry would kill herself. Nobody can come to understand why she killed herself, she seemed happy, and Minnie took it harder than anyone else. As Rosemary and Guy were getting ready for bed, Rosemary was thinking whether or not she was going to tell Hutch about the incident but Guy convinced her not to. The next Monday Minni knocked on their door to introduce herself, and from that day on Rosemary couldn't get rid of her. They went to dinner at their place and ended the night arguing about when they should have babies, and again Rosemary had lost the battle.

Quote
"And even knowing what was in the note, Guy pointed out, they might still not know the full answer, for part of it had probably been beyond Terry's own understanding. Something had led her to drugs and something had led her to death; what that something was, it was too late now for anyone to know" ( Levin 41).

Reaction
Once Rosemary and Guy went up to their apartment, they started talking about what might of led Terry to end her life so soon. Guy pointed out that what ever it was nobody will ever understanding and that part of it was even hard for Terry to understand. I think this quote is powerful in so many different levels. Sometimes we do do things that we can't understand, and what ever that is if we can't come to understand it, how will we answer to other's when they ask why? I like that fact that Rosemary points out that whatever had led her to drugs, led her to death because it's almost as it the same dark force is at work in both cases. I thought that the first couple of chapters were a good introduction to the story. Many books just tell you the name of the characters and that's it. A few actually tell you about their lives and how they live, and their everyday routine. The most traumatic thing that happened this early in the book was Terry's dead. I wasn't expecting that someone was going to die this soon. It made me think that even though some people paint a perfect smile on their face, we don't really know what their really feeling or thinking. That's why we can't always assume or make judgements before we get to know someone, no matter how perfect they look on the outside, they might be burning up inside and we wouldn't know. I find it really important to always ask people how their really feeling.
