A Natural History of Love (13-17)
Summary
So far we have talked about Cleopatra and love poems in Egypt. Now it breaks love into 6 key themes. The first theme is "Love's alchemy, or the power to transform". This theme is all about how we have problems with who we are and by loving our partners, or our significant half, we learn to love ourselves. The second theme is "Idealizing the beloved in images drawn from nature". This theme talks about why we refer to someone as a gem, or a flower, or the moon, but we don't say skyscraper. It's about using nature to express our love for each other. The 3rd theme is " Love is enslavement". It's about how when were inlove we give part of our freedom away, and how were more willing to give it someone we love, then the government or a dictator. The 4th theme is "Being Disabled", meaning how we can't keep our mind of the person and how we never seem to be focusing on anything but them. It talks about how love becomes a sickness that we all want. The 5th theme is " A secret kept from one's parents" this theme is all about us not being able to express love to the person or people we love but were willing to express it to strangers. We keep it a secret from the person we really love. The 6th theme is "Redoubling of the senses", and this is all about a lover's touch. These are the 6 themes of love. Then it starts talking about incest marriage and how some thought it to be normal, while other thought it to be wrong and condoned in the bible. We long for the desire to love, and to be loved.
Quote
"...every now and then, people go haywire, lose their ability to think clearly, have stomachaches, can't sleep properly, and spend hours daydreaming. Such a state has all the earmarks of disease and, as the Egyptian love poems remind us, people have always described love as sickness" (Ackerman 13).
Reaction
I agree with alot of what the 6 themes of love is. When people are in love they do feel like they can't do nothing, and everytime they try it's like their minds walks and we start thinking about the one we love. I also agree with the fact that were more willing to give away all our freedom to the one we love, rather than the government. The quote above, once again, states how when your in love your always daydreaming. It also describes love as being a sickness.

A Natural History of Love (3-12)
Summary
Love. Hard to define because love had many different meanings. There's a love between a girlfriend and her boyfriend, parental love, and love for material things. Love can bring the most sane people almost to the brink of insanity, it can make the toughest people become soft. Love can make the strongest people, become weak. It's a word that means so much, but is often used lightly. This book "A Natural History of Love" gives you the inside and out about love. It not only takes us to modern times but first it takes us, way back. I'm talking about Egypt, Greece, Rome, and even the middle ages. But first we take a trip to Egypt and learn about how they used and thought about love. First it talks about Cleopatra and her romance. Cleopatra was born in 69 B.C and was mainly Greek. she had everyman she wanted, and every men wanted her, they couldn't help it. One thing I really found interesting was that Cleopatra was married to Mark Anthony, and they had kids together. The book talks about their love and how she and Caesar had a history as well. Cleopatra's life was filled with everything she wanted, she was elegant, and wore the things. She was pretty pretty, it was the things she wore, the way she carried herself that made men follow her when she entered a room. Everyone thought that she was the best, but she had a lot of bad history. For instance, she killed her siblings in order to become queen, but Egyptians didn't seem to write about that kind of stuff. Then, the book talked about what Egyptians thought about love, and their idea can seem to be a bit sexual today. Egyptians expressed their love in many ways, and the most common was in music, dances, and poems. More frequently it was in love poems. Their poems are amazing and beautiful!
Quote
"Keeping our failings a secret, we assume no one on earth is as neurotic, no one as uniquely flawed. The rampantly beautiful person we are attracted to couldn't possibly be as frail. He is a contagion of virtues. Loving him, we sing his praises, highlighting all his good points. We redefine him to himself. Through love on learns to feel lovable" (Akerman 12).
Reaction
So far I found this book to be very very interesting. The whole definition of love keeps me thinking. I like the fact how the book talks about all the different love countries and romance time periods. The quote above is a way we feel when we love someone. It was talking about how were all imperfect and sometimes we find that the person we love have no flaws and that were the ones who have to work on things. The quote is saying that when we love someone we can't seem to find things that they need to work on, and that by loving them, by being in love, we learn to love ourselves and they learn to love us.

Rosemary's Baby Movie
Sections/Characters minimized in the film
One of the characters minimized in the film was the doctor. In this book he seemed to be on every chapter and Rosemary would go to him every week, but in the film he didn't seem to appear much, and when his scenes did come, some were cut short.
Sections/Characters emphasized in the film
There was actually no characters that were minimized in the book that were emphasized in the film. The characters with the big part were Guy, Rosemary, Roman, and Minnie. The film was all about Guy and Rosemary, as in the book.
Narration
There was no narration, or a voice from "above". The character's did all the explaining to us as part of their scripts. In the book there was a narrator who told us the story when it wasn't Rosemary telling us, but in the film it's mostly the actors.
Recurring images(motifs)
A recurring image is when Rosemary keeps thinking back on the "dream" she had, which was reality. Another is when the film kept showing her in pain and the necklace that Minnie and Roman gave her.
Use of music/ sound effects
There's a use of music in the beginning of the film. There's a lullaby, it's not your regular one though, it sounds mysterious, almost as if your going to see something horrible and scary in the first scene. It gets your heart pumping expecting something to pop out. This lullaby is almost like the soundtrack of the film. It begins it and ends it. But through out the film there are some sound effects. For example, when Rosemary is running, or when she's scared and just found out something. Like in the scene when she was in the telephone booth, and when she turned to get out she saw a man that looked like the doctor. She was scared, the they used sound effects to show the man turning around.
Film Terms
In the movies there were a lot of medium shot, and long shots. But most of all there were close-up shots to show emotions and most of them were Rosemary's. There was a lot of POV (Point Of View) shots as well. One of them was when Rosemary was brought through the closet and her eyes were opened, we saw the bottom of the cabinets, we saw the people standing around her, and we saw Satan all through her eyes. Another example was when she went to open the door for Minnie and she looked through the peep hole.

Rosemary's Baby (p. 126-216)
"...pain, even constant pain, was no excuse for staying indoors, as much as she had. She would fight it from now on, fight it with air and sunlight and activity, not succumb to it in Bramford gloom under the well-meant pamperings of Minnie and Guy and Roman. Pain, begone! she thought; I will have no more of thee! The pain stayed, immune to Positive Thinking" (Levin 136).
Reaction
When Rosemary said the quote above she was thinking that maybe if she thought positive thoughs that her pain would be gone. She couldn't believe that she left pain stop her from living her life. I think that it's something we can all think about. Can we really afford to waste out time hanging around the house? Sometimes we use the lamest excuses not to go outside. What Rosemary had in mind was that if she kept thinking positive she'll get results, this is something we can all start doing. Thinking positive doesn't cost us nothing, but somehow we keep thinking negative because those negative thoughts seems more realistic than positive ones. Even though if nothing changes we will have a better attitude towards things and we will look at things from a brighter side, like Rosemary was starting to do.

Rosemary's Baby (p. 65-126)
Summary
Guy has been spending alot of time with the castevets' lately. Rosemary didn't feel like going because of her period but she wont be alone because Minnie and Laura-Louise, minni's friend, invited themselves over. While rosemary was keeping busy making window cushions for the windows, Minnie gave her a little present, it was the same exact ball-charm that Terry had. A part of her didn't understand why it was given to her. Rosemary couldn't bring herself to wear the charm because of the awkward smell, dispite the fact that Guy thinks it's rude. Everything was going good but something strange happened. Guy heard news that Donald Baumgart, the guy he was going up against on a part, had gone blind and he couldn't do it. Guy became depressed and wouldn't pay Rosemary any mind for days. When Guy finally came to his sense's he apologized and told Rosemary that they should have a baby, and soon. They had a romantic dinner, but Rosemary started to feel a little dizy after the cup of mousse that Minnie gave them. But little to Guy's knowledge, Rosemary didn't finish the mousse, instead she dumped it on her napkin and threw it away. After Rosemary passed out Guy continued to make love to her, and Rosemary noticed that nothing was a dream, but more of a reality. She had a "dream" that something was sracthing her, a "dream" that somebody pushed her through a door into Minnies house and everybody was there, almost like a party, but except that they were naked. She seen something that was almost non-humane and that looked like a monster. From that day forward things between her and Guy hadn't been the same. That passion that they had wasn't the same anymore. A few days had past and Guy told Rosemary that she was pregnant because her period didn't come yet. She didn't believe him but it turned out to be true. Rosemary began wearing that ball charm that Minnie gave her inorder to keep the baby save. The Castevets transferred her to another doctor who they know very well. Roman finally came to visit and found everything suspicious, the castevets, the "special drink that they were giving her, and because of the pain that she was experiencing.
Quote
"There were so many dangers to worry about in the months ahead; fires, falling objects, cars out of control; dangers that had never been dangers before but were dangers now, now that Andrew-or-Susan was begun and living" (Levin 111).
Reaction
Th quote shows how much a mother thinks about when she becomes pregnant. Like Rosemary said all the things that never seemed dangerous before becomes a danger because you have this new life that has started and it's your responsibility to take care of it, even though sometimes they can go a little overboard. The story has become more interesting now that Rosemary's pregnant. Somethings are becoming a little more mysterious, like why did Minnie give them the mousse that made her dizy, and why did Rosemary have that horrible dream that seemed so real? I think that she's into something, some sort of spell and I don't think that the drink that she's given is working, and I can't wait to find out!

Rosemary's Baby (p. 3-65)
Summary
Rosemary's Baby: scary, thrilling, and bound to give you goose bumps. Through the first few page of the book we get to meet Guy, Rosemary, Hutch, Minnie, Roman, Terry, and a few other characters. Guy in inspiring actor who's still waiting for the big role that will move them to Hollywood, but until then he's working on his career with the little roles he has and rosemary is always there to support them. Rosemary and Guy had been trying to find an apartment in the most beautiful building ever, the BRAMFORD, only there were no more space. So they were put on the waiting list. Just as they found another ( not as beautiful and big but good enough for them) house, they got the call they were waiting for. They got the house! Even though the apartment belonged to an old lady that had died, they took it. Now Hutch, a long time friend of there's, is trying to keep them from moving into the apartment by telling them horrible stories that suppossibly happened at the Bram. He told them the story of the Trench sisters, two sisters who ate little children, including their niece. He also told them about Adrian Marcato, who practice witchcraft, and since people had believed him, he got mobbed and attacked, and almost killed in the lobby. The stories obviously gave Rosemary the chills, but Guy quickly dismissed them by telling her that Hutch was just trying to scare them. Once they finally moved in, Rosemary kept herself busy by decorating the house and making sure everything is in order, and Guy was away working on getting roles. Rosemary was always going about her day, unphased at all by what Hutch said until she had to go down to the basement, the most scariest part of the building. Hutch had once told her that someone killed a baby and left it at the corner of the basement. But she quickly found a laundry mate named Terry. Terry was staying with Minnie and Roman, who basically adopted her, she was going through some stuff times and they saved her and gave her a home, something nobody had ever done before. She and Rosemary quickly hit it off and Rosemary brought her upstairs to meet Guy. Unfortunately, Terry was hurting inside my something that nobody can know, that perfect smile that she put off for all to see fooled everyone, except for herself. That brought destruction. Terry jumped out the window one day when Rosemary and Guy went out. When they were returning back they got startled by the police cars and the many people outside. Once they came closer they saw that it was Terry. That's how they met Minnie and Roman, who couldn't believe that Terry would kill herself. Nobody can come to understand why she killed herself, she seemed happy, and Minnie took it harder than anyone else. As Rosemary and Guy were getting ready for bed, Rosemary was thinking whether or not she was going to tell Hutch about the incident but Guy convinced her not to. The next Monday Minni knocked on their door to introduce herself, and from that day on Rosemary couldn't get rid of her. They went to dinner at their place and ended the night arguing about when they should have babies, and again Rosemary had lost the battle.
Quote
"And even knowing what was in the note, Guy pointed out, they might still not know the full answer, for part of it had probably been beyond Terry's own understanding. Something had led her to drugs and something had led her to death; what that something was, it was too late now for anyone to know" ( Levin 41).
Reaction
Once Rosemary and Guy went up to their apartment, they started talking about what might of led Terry to end her life so soon. Guy pointed out that what ever it was nobody will ever understanding and that part of it was even hard for Terry to understand. I think this quote is powerful in so many different levels. Sometimes we do do things that we can't understand, and what ever that is if we can't come to understand it, how will we answer to other's when they ask why? I like that fact that Rosemary points out that whatever had led her to drugs, led her to death because it's almost as it the same dark force is at work in both cases. I thought that the first couple of chapters were a good introduction to the story. Many books just tell you the name of the characters and that's it. A few actually tell you about their lives and how they live, and their everyday routine. The most traumatic thing that happened this early in the book was Terry's dead. I wasn't expecting that someone was going to die this soon. It made me think that even though some people paint a perfect smile on their face, we don't really know what their really feeling or thinking. That's why we can't always assume or make judgements before we get to know someone, no matter how perfect they look on the outside, they might be burning up inside and we wouldn't know. I find it really important to always ask people how their really feeling.
